The October update to (and 6th installment of) Zach Billings' monthly series 'The State of AI Search'

What influences whether a dealership appears in AI answers—and which commonly promoted tactics are failing to show a clear relationship with visibility?
In the sixth installment of State of AI Search, Wikimotive Co-founder and CEO Zach Billings shares October findings from Wikimotive’s ongoing AI Visibility Study. Examining 65 prompts across brand sentiment, dealer discovery, and inventory discovery, the research compares how ChatGPT presents Chevrolet dealerships in rural and metropolitan markets.
Watch the briefing for findings on customer reviews, website content, inventory, and third-party marketplaces—plus a closer look at why an AI citation and a dealership recommendation deserve different interpretations.

What the Study Found

  • The question changes the sources. General questions about a dealership frequently drew on dealer-controlled information. Questions evaluating the dealership’s reputation relied more heavily on outside sources, including reviews.
  • Content was common among cited inventory pages. In the study’s inventory-discovery results, 86% of cited dealership pages contained content, while 69% contained inventory.
  • Third-party marketplaces appeared frequently. At least one third party appeared in 79% of metropolitan inventory-discovery results and 98% of rural results. Zach explains why this alone does not justify additional listing spend.
  • Common technical talking points lacked a clear relationship with visibility. The study did not establish llms.txt, schema markup, FAQs, maps, or website platform as consistent predictors of inclusion.
  • Results varied across repeated tests. Zach discusses how changing answers complicate visibility tracking—and why reports should distinguish being cited as a source from being recommended as a dealership.

The session also addresses how to investigate overlap between paid and organic search, where paid search can support service marketing, and what agencies should do to prevent ads from promoting sold inventory or expired offers. It also includes a Live Q&A segment.

About the Research

These findings reflect observations from Wikimotive’s ongoing study of Chevrolet dealerships in selected rural and metropolitan markets. They identify patterns among cited results rather than establish universal ranking rules. The study continues as additional dealerships and makes are added.

Keep Following the Research

State of AI Search examines what changing search experiences mean for dealership marketing, using ongoing research and practitioner observations to separate useful developments from sales pitches.
