Now that we’re firmly into 2014, it’s time to take a step back and reflect a bit. If you are anything like me, your December 2013 was a whirlwind of shopping, both online and in stores. I try hard to pay attention to how each store I buy from is run, as a digital marketer that’s just my nature. My goal, I’d say, is to come away with a clear picture of the current state of ecommerce, what’s working, what’s not, and what techniques companies are employing to reel in those last few holiday dollars.

This year, the trend I noticed most was the amount of people who were shopping on their smartphones. This was great news for online retailers but less so for physical locations. I saw (and also was guilty of) people shopping in a store, finding an item they liked, and then pulling out their phone and buying it online for a cheaper price. This, of course, has been happening for years, but now it is becoming the rule instead of the exception. No wonder stores like Best Buy are having trouble, they’re becoming glorified showrooms for Amazon.com!
